Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the Nights twice five; 2 And the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
