A numerous company from among the first, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
