Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
