The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But save him who fears 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
