The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place – 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
