The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 And the moon as she follows in his wake, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 Thamood belied in their pride 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
