Nay, and by the moon, 32 And by oath of the night when it turns back. 33 And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,- 34 hell is certainly the greatest calamity. 35 A warning to mankind, 36 To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except those of the right hand 39 In Gardens they will question 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 'What caused you to be thrust into the Scorching (Fire)' 42 They will reply: 'We were not among those who prayed 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 and we indulged in vain talk with those who indulged in vain talk, 45 and the Day of Judgment we were wont to call a lie 46 until there came to us the certainty. 47 So, the intercession of intercessors will not avail them. 48 Why then do they turn away from the admonition 49 as if they were startled asses 50 fleeing before a lion? 51 Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about. 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 No indeed; surely it is a Reminder; 54 Then whoever wills will remember it. 55 And what advice will they heed, except if Allah wills? Only He deserves to be feared, and His only is the greatness of forgiving. 56
