The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
