Nay, verily: By the Moon, 32 And by the Night as it retreateth, 33 By the dawn when it lightens! 34 That (Hell) is surely one of the greater (signs), 35 a warning to humans, 36 To any of you that chooses to go forward (by working righteous deeds), or to remain behind (by commiting sins), 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 save those who shall have attained to righteousness: 39 who shall be in the Gardens, and shall ask 40 and will ask of the criminals, 41 "What has brought you into the Fire of Hell ?" 42 They will say: we have not been of those who prayed. 43 Nor did we feed the wretched. 44 We indulged and persisted in useless disputes, 45 "And we used to belie the Day of Recompense 46 Until there came to us the certainty." 47 So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them. 48 Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away 49 as though they were frightened wild asses, 50 Fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey. 51 In fact every one of them wants to be given open books (like the prophets). 52 By no means. In fact they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment. 54 So whoever pleases may mind it. 55 And they shall not heed unless Allah willeth. He is the Lord of piety, and the Lord of forgiveness. 56
