Ad gave the lie to the apostles. 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 You construct monuments on every hill in vain, 128 "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)? 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 So fear God, and obey me; 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 and with gardens and springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 this is nothing but a habit of the ancients: 137 We are not going to be damned." 138 And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
