The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 in which you are now living 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
