a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
