A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
