The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
