The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
