The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
