A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
