The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
