Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
