Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
