A multitude of those of old 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
