The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
