The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked round; 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
