Said the Council of the people of Pharaoh, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer 109 "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?" 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 "That they bring up to you all well-versed sorcerers." 112 The sorcerers came to Pharaoh. They said: 'Shall we be rewarded if we are the winners' 113 Answered [Pharaoh]: "Yes; and verily, you shall be among those who are near unto me." 114 They said: O Moses! Either throw (first) or let us be the first throwers? 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 And We revealed to Moses: 'Cast thy staff!' And lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention. 117 ۞ So the truth was proved and their works were disproved. 118 Thus they were overcome and made to look abject. 119 And the magicians were obliged to fall prostrate. 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 But Pharaoh said: "You have come to accept belief in Him without my permission! This surely is a plot you have hatched to expel the people from the land. You will soon come to know. 123 I shall cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides, and then crucify you all.' 124 They said: verily unto our Lord we are turning. 125 And you do not resent us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]." 126
