Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
