The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
