The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
