The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 Within gardens and springs 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
