Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
