The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ When the inevitable event takes place, 1 (and none denies its descending) 2 Abasing (some), exalting (others); 3 When the earth is shaken violently, 4 and the mountains will crumble 5 so that they become as scattered dust 6 On that day, you (mankind) will be divided into three groups: 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 9 But the foremost shall be [they who in life were] the foremost [in faith and good works]: 10 Those are they who will be brought nigh 11 In Gardens of Bliss: 12 a host of the ancients 13 and only a few of them from the later generations. 14 On couches in wrought with gold. 15 reclining upon them, set face to face, 16 Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness), 17 with goblets, and ewers, and cups filled with water from unsullied springs 18 that will neither make the head throb, nor intoxicate, 19 And fruit; that they may choose. 20 And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire. 21 They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes, 22 like pearls preserved in their shells, 23 A Reward for the deeds of their past (life). 24 Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 Only the saying, "Peace! Peace". 26 As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right! 27 Midst lote-trees thornless. 28 And banana-trees (with fruits), one above another. 29 And spreading shade, 30 And water flowing constantly, 31 and fruits abounding 32 Neither ending nor forbidden. 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 and made them virgins, 36 Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age, 37 For the Companions of the Right Hand. 38
