The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
