The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
