He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And hath fear, 9 You neglect. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 olives, dates, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
