۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he said unto his father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye pay devotion? 52 They said: We found our fathers worshippers of them. 53 Abraham said, "Indeed, you and your fathers have been clearly misguided." 54 They said: "Are you expressing your true ideas before us or are you jesting?" 55 He answered: "Nay, but your [true] Sustainer is the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth - He who has brought them into being: and I am one of those who bear witness to this [truth]!" 56 And by Allah I shall surely devise a plot against your idols after ye turned away backward. 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 They said: Who has done this to our gods? Most surely he is one of the unjust. 59 Some said, "We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them." 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 'Abraham' they said, 'was it you who did this to our gods' 62 He said: "Nay, this was done by - this is their biggest one! ask them, if they can speak intelligently!" 63 Then they turned to one another and said, "It is you yourselves who are in the wrong," 64 Then their minds were turned upside down, and they said: "You know well that they do not speak." 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship beside Allah. Do you have no sense?" 67 They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." 68 We said, "O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!" 69 And they wished to set a snare for him, but We made them the greater losers. 70 and We delivered him, and Lot, unto the land that We had blessed for all beings. 71 We granted him Isaac and Jacob as a gift and helped both of them to become righteous people. 72 We made them leaders who guided people by Our command. We revealed to them the doing of good, observance of prayer and the giving of alms and Us alone did they worship. 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge and delivered him from the city which practiced abomination. They were indeed a wicked people. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
