The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That indeed were an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
