In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 Stay up the night long save a little 2 (a half of it, or diminish a little, 3 or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly; 4 We are about to reveal to you a mighty word. 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 So how will you save yourselves, if you disbelieve, on a day that will turn children old? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
