The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the inevitable event comes, 1 (and none denies its descending) 2 abasing [some,] exalting [others]! 3 When the earth is shaken up convulsively, 4 And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, 5 So that they become a scattered dust, 6 And ye will be three kinds: 7 The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right! 8 And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! 9 And the preceders are the preceders. 10 Those are they who will be brought nigh 11 In the Gardens of delight (Paradise). 12 a good many of those of olden times, 13 And a few of the later peoples, 14 on lavish couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 They will be served by immortal boys, 17 carrying goblets and ewers and cups filled with the purest wine, 18 Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, 19 along with fruits of their choice; 20 Bird meats that they relish, 21 And [with them will be their] companions pure, most beautiful of eye, 22 like the pearls in their shells: 23 The reward for what they did. 24 Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,- 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 Those on the Right, how fortunate are those on the Right! 27 They will be in (the shade) of thornless lote 28 and serried acacias, 29 and amid the extended shade 30 and gushing water, 31 and abundant fruit, 32 Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden, 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 Verily We! We have created those maidens by a creation. 35 And made them virgins, 36 Beloved (by nature), equal in age,- 37 For those of the right hand. 38
