a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
