The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And rejects the best, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
