Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
