The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 126 I seek of you no reward for this; my reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 and erect castles hoping that you will live forever. 129 And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; 130 "Now fear Allah, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 gardens and fountains. 134 for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 This is but a fable of the men of old, 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 In this there is evidence (of the Truth), yet most of them do not have any faith. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
