THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
