A crowd of earlier generations 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
