He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
