A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
