The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 May he be condemned! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
