Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
