Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 The command that We have been sending 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
