A multitude of those of old 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 “And also our forefathers?” 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
