A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 And say: "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike. 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefore, O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him, proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
