A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
